Fillings in Wilmington, DE
Traditional fillings, also called dental restoratives, are often made from composite materials, porcelain, or gold. We use these materials because of their sturdiness and long-lasting qualities. Traditional filling material protects restored teeth in the back of the mouth because and endures the wear and tear associated with chewing.
However, these conventional fillings are not always the first choice for repairing front teeth. When our patients have a cavity on a front tooth, they want filling material that is natural looking, blending in well with their teeth. In situations like these, we recommend using filling material made from plastic compounds or ceramic. Referred to as composite resins, these compounds, offer a natural look.
How to Choose Filling Materials
If you need a cavity filled, the following situations should be taken into consideration:
Before you begin your treatment, we will discuss your options so that you choose the most effective dental filling for your situation.
Dental Filling Procedures
Direct Fillings: During this procedure, we will prep the tooth, set the filling, and make final adjustments all in one appointment. Direct fillings include:
Indirect Fillings: These types of fillings require more time in the dental chair. At a minimum, you will need to schedule at least two appointments. Indirect dental restoratives include the following:
Bridges made with base metal alloys, composites, ceramics, or gold are also members of the indirect filling category.
During the first visit, we will prepare the tooth and make an impression. Next, an impermanent covering is applied over the tooth. This covering protects the tooth while the impression is sent to the laboratory, and the restorative is created. Once this is completed, a second appointment is scheduled and for the restoration to be completed.

Tooth Sealants in Wilmington
Do find it hard to keep your teeth clean? Gaining access to hard to reach places in your mouth can be aggravating and toothbrushes are not designed to clean the tiny crevices and grooves of your teeth, especially your molars. Unfortunately, when you can’t properly brush these parts of your teeth, tooth decay develops. However, individuals that have sealants applied to the chewing surfaces of their teeth have an added layer of protection against tooth deterioration and cavities.
Dental sealants are not obvious to the naked eye. They are composed of plastic resin material that toughens and bonds to the deep groves of your tooth’s surface. Sealants smooth out these tiny grooves, making it harder for plaque to settle in and stay for an unwelcomed, overextended visit. Patients that have sealants find that brushing their teeth is easier and they need fewer fillings.
Children benefit from sealants too. At New Concept Dental, we use sealants as a preventive measure after the eruption of permanent teeth. Like in adults, these sealants keep tooth decay at bay. In rare instances, we may recommend sealants for baby teeth, but it is more common to only seal permanent teeth.
Sealants are not designed to last forever. You can expect the sealants on your teeth to last from three to five year. However, it is not unusual for us to see adults that still have their childhood sealants intact. If your sealants become cracked, or you have had them for some time, check with us to see if your teeth need to be resealed.
